Q1: What kind of game is The Whispered World?

The Whispered World is a classic “point & click” adventure game, which means you direct one or more characters (in our case Sadwick & Spot) through hand-drawn backgrounds. Your main task involves talking to other characters, as well as collecting and combining items you may find along your way, in order to solve puzzles and progress in the game.

Q2: For which platforms will The Whispered World be released?

The PC version will be released this summer in German-speaking territories shortly. Other territories will follow later. A version for Nintendo DS is also in development.

Q3: Who are the main characters of The Whispered World?

In The Whispered World, the player takes on the role of Sadwick. Sadwick is a young clown but often far from cheerful. One night, a strange blue creature speaks to him in a dream, and sends him on an adventurous journey. Many dangers await Sadwick, for the world he knows is doomed to crumble and fall.

On his journey, he is accompanied by his pet worm Spot. Since he was a larva, Spot has never left Sadwicks side.

Q4: What role does the sidekick Spot play in the game?

Whenever he wants the player can use Spot with objects in the game-environment, in order to open paths that are normally not accessible to Sadwick.
Moreover, you will often make good use of Spots astounding transformation abilities: in the course of the game Spot learns a range of different forms, which endow him with certain faculties (he can for instance inflate his body to a ball or set himself aflame as Fire-Spot). A seperate menu allows you to change between Spot’s different forms at anytime.

Q5: What can we expect from the game’s music?

A lot of care and hard work goes into the soundtrack for The Whispered World, which is being composed and recorded at Hamburg’s Periscope Studios.

The music is recorded live by an ensemble of classical, in order to further reinforce the depth and emotion of the engaging storyline via musical means.

In order to reflect the diversity of the imaginative world we are creating, each of the four game chapters will have a different musical emphasis. Taken together, these music segments create a unifying musical frame for the story events, which seamlessly fits into the game ambience and brings the manifold aspects of characters and plot to light.
Catchy themes that mirror the obvious beauty of this fairy-tale world will be joined by more abstract compositions and unusual sounds. They will reflect the difficult decisions the player will have to make as he lives through the inner conflict of the protagonist.

Q6: What are the creative inspirations behind TWW?

We have taken a lot of inspiration both from European and Asian fantasy, such as the animated movies of Hayao Miyazaki, as well as from classic fairy tales. Of course, the game is also very much indebted to the great adventure games of the past, like Monkey Island from LucasArts.

Q7: What makes the artwork in TWW so special?

What is unique about The Whispered World, is that we’re realizing basically the whole game in 2D with hand-painted backgrounds and traditional hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation. That gives the look of the game a great cohesiveness and a storybook quality that many of today’s games are missing. We are employing complex parallax scrolling of backgrounds made up of up to 20 layers, which gives the environments great depth and makes the world feel very much alive. The many, many background animations add to this, of course.

Q8: From start to finish, how long does it take to draw one background of TWW?

It depends very much on the size and complexity. A small background that takes up only a part of one screen and is not very complex can be finished in a day. But then we have very large backgrounds in TWW that are about the size of six individual screens and are composed of dozens of layers and animated objects – these can take three works and more to complete.

Q9: How long has TWW been in development?
Development stretches a couple of years back, when the project was first conceived by Marco Hüllen, our lead artist on the project. The main phase of development began in August 2007.

Q10: Will you soon put out a demo?

A demo is definitely planned. The exact date has not been decided.

Q11: I’ve heard of a playable demo of The Whispered World somewhere out there on the internets. What’s that all about?

The demo dates back to a time, when The Whispered World was still developed by just one person. Besides the fundamental game idea and the comparable graphics it hasn’t much in common with our version of the game. We profoundly but carefully remodelled and extended the game, one example being the new look of the main character. On top of professional voice-overs and a new soundtrack, the completed game will also feature more in every regards – more content, more animations, more fun puzzles!

Q12: Can you already say something about the system requirements?

MS Windows XP (min. SP2) or MS Windows Vista
2 GHz CPU
1 GB RAM
256 MB RAM GPU
DirectX® Version 9.0c
DVD-Drive

Q13: Which resolution is supported by The Whispered World?

The native resolution of The Whispered World is 1024 * 768 pixel.
